Back to civilization

(Utdrag ur ett inlägg för Ericsson Response-bloggen, orkar inte översätta.)
Just arrived to Malakal after almost two weeks in Maban. Someone said the other day that "Maban is as deep into the field as it gets". There was no running water, no electricity (except for the fortunate ones that have generators), you stay in a tent, you shower with a bucket, the food is cooked over open fire and there are chicken, pigs, dogs and goats all over the place. Compared to this Malakal feels almost civilized although you live in a military bunkhouse. This afternoon I have cleaned dust and mud and you-don't-want-to-know-what from my shoes, spent half an hour in the shower, turned the AC way down low and just relaxed. And started to long back to Maban... Why? Because it's a quite countryside village, because of the people I worked with and because it's an easy life where every day are more or less the same. So how was it compared to what I expected? It was hotter and dustier but a lot  fewer insects than expected. And a lot calmer and safer. The different UN agencies and NGO worked really well together. And the refuge camps were a lot less well organized and, how shall I put this, more uplifting than depressing to visit.
